Across our nations, kids arrive at school every day and find themselves surrounded by advertising, marketing, and even rewards that promote unhealthy foods and beverages and most parents aren’t aware that it is happening in their schools until they are shown a clear example.
That’s the concept behind the new creative added to the “Don’t Sell Us Short™” Junk food Marketing in Schools toolkit. The design points out a method of marketing, a reward for a good grade, that many parents don’t think of as marketing until it is pointed out. The colorful graphic catches the eye, then the copy asks “Is your school still serving junk food?” and goes on to explain that reward programs, coupons and signage undermines the other messages kids learn in school about healthy eating and physical activity.
