Gimme Five: Netcentric’s Dawn Arteaga

As Director of Digital Strategy at Netcentric Campaigns, Dawn leads the team to develop powerful advocacy campaigns and overall network strategy. Dawn is a mother of two and is happy to help change policies and environments to create a healthier America.

What inspired you to start working on childhood obesity?
When I joined Netcentric Campaigns at the beginning of this year, I was delighted to be placed on the team working on PreventObesity.net. As a mother of a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, I feel like I’m in constant battle with sugar and junk food! I am so grateful to have the opportunity to leverage my 10+ years in digital strategy to help equip other moms, community leaders and health experts to join together so we can win the war on childhood obesity.

How are you helping to reverse childhood obesity?
By helping each of the wonderful Leaders of PreventObesity.net reach a bigger audience with more impact and energy than they would be able to do alone. Together, we really are all stronger!

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far in helping reduce childhood obesity?
It has been an honor to work on the campaign to ban junk food marketing in schools. Thanks to each of you, we’ve brought the USDA a huge groundswell of support — roughly 60,000 people across the movement! When my son goes to public preschool for the first time in September, I am so relieved and gratified to know that thanks to each of you, there is a better chance he won’t be tempted by marketing to try out food we don’t let him eat at home.

Who is your role model in your work?
I actually think about my kids every day I go to work. It’s important to me to do something that leaves them with a better world, and justifies every second I don’t spend by their side. Working at Netcentric Campaigns for causes such as PreventObesity.net lets me do just that and I dedicate my work to them.

What healthy snacks did you enjoy growing up?
Growing up, my mom set a great example of healthy living with fruit for dessert and veggies for snacks instead of canned, sweetened or junk foods. Even today, I’ll take a bowl of grapes over a bowl of ice cream any day of the week!
