Across the U.S., many families and individuals struggle with food insecurity. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps alleviate this issue by enabling participants to stretch their food dollars and purchase healthier foods. And SNAP incentive programs take it a step further – financial incentives encourage SNAP participants to buy more fruits and vegetables, which not only helps families eat healthier food options, but also strengthens local economies by generating higher sales and job growth.

Looking for scientific facts from reliable sources to support your campaign efforts? Check out the Voices for Healthy Kids Fast Facts page which includes documents on Active Places, Early Care and Education, Head Start and Early Head Start, Healthy Food Access, Healthy Food Options in Public Places (procurement), Local Wellness Policies, Physical Education, SNAP Incentives, and Sugary Drinks. These documents provide facts from up-to-date studies and “fast facts” written in consumer-friendly language. They have been through the American Heart Association science review process, so you can feel assured they are accurate and reliable.

The Local Wellness Policies toolkit now includes a webinar, Components of a Wellness Policy,  which walks through the history of USDA’s final wellness rule and through the different sections of a strong wellness policy with local and state examples shared by our partners at Center for Science in the Public Interest, We-Collab, and Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This 30-minute webinar is great for current grantees who are considering running a wellness policy campaign.

The Healthy Kids Meals toolkit now includes a memorandum from ChangeLab Solutions on Regulation of Restaurant Kids’ Meals and the First Amendment, and two resources developed in conjunction with CSPI: a Chart of Local Restaurant Kids’ Meal Policies and Improving Restaurant Kids’ Meals: Impact on Low-Income Children & Children of Color.

A new message wheel has been added to the Early Care and Education toolkit! A message wheel is a simple visual format for organizing the messages that are key to your issue. Your most important message – that one thing you always want to share – is placed in the middle of the wheel. Supporting statements – which would likely include the problem, solution, and one or two other key statements - are placed around the wheel like spokes. Points that explain or expound on your supporting statements are added under each heading.
