“Look both ways!”…when we cross the street with children, these words come from our mouths almost automatically. Protecting children—teaching them how to live a long life—is so natural. In the same way, teaching children how to live healthy, active lives should be just as natural. Walking or biking to school is one of the best ways for children to practice safety while learning to build physical activity into their everyday lives. In some communities where sidewalks and bike lanes are scarce, we’re missing a key opportunity to help our children lead long, healthy lives. When our kids have safe routes and are able to bike or walk to school, they’re more eager and ready to learn, they are healthier, and our streets are safer. It’s time to ensure that every child has a safe route to school.

This new online toolkit includes:

  • Social media posts to educate consumers on safe routes to school, Bike to School Day (May 6th) and posts to share state success stories.
  • Sample media pitch, LTE and Op-Eds to help your team or coalition garner media on community walkability and/or plan a Bike to School Day on May 8th for promoting safe routes to school. Please consider your own stories and experiences as a way to personalize the op-ed. Be sure to include specific information about your campaign.
  • Action Alert to spur your advocates and the general public to get involved with your campaign. Use this draft action alert on safe routes to school for inspiration to develop one for your specific campaign. These alerts can be sent out via e-mail, letter, phone call or even on social media.
  • Graphics and a Video to use with social media content and your action alerts or use with pitches to media and bloggers.
