Leaders Featured in Webinar on Healthy Fundraisers

Class is in session.

Or rather, webinars.

Several PreventObesity.net Leaders are featured as speakers in upcoming webinars this month, showcasing the wide breadth of expertise found in the network and the range of important issues driving the childhood obesity movement. First up: Leaders take on unhealthy school fundraisers.

PreventObesity.net Leader Casey Hinds will join fellow Leaders Margo Wootan of the Center for Science in the Public Interest and Jamie Chriqui of the University of Illinois at Chicago for a May 23 webinar studying healthy school fundraising options.

Many school fundraisers rely on the sale of unhealthy food such as candy or baked goods. But there are profitable and healthier fundraising options, and speakers will offer tips for implementing these fundraisers in your community.

The webinar is slated for 1 p.m. EST on May 23. Click here to register.

The Safe Routes Coaching Action Network also will host a webinar on May 22 studying successful safe routes programs at two award-winning schools. The National Center for Safe Routes to School recently honored Heatherwood Elementary School in Boulder, Colo., and Omro Middle School in Omro, Wis., for “outstanding achievement in promoting safe walking and bicycling to school.”

During the webinar, Melisa Kramer-Badtke, a regional safe routes coordinator, is expected to share how the rural city of Omro was able to implement a successful safe routes program despite the fact that only about 42 percent of its middle school students live within two miles of school. Safe Routes coordinator Amy Thompson will share how Heatherwood Elementary was able to increase the number of students walking and biking to school from 12 percent to more than 43 percent in just three years. Thompson also will discuss how the school was able to include its autistic students in the district-wide Bike to School Day.

The webinar is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST on May 22. Click here to register.

And of course, don’t forget PreventObesity.net’s webinar on how joint use agreements are helping prevent obesity.

The webinar is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST TODAY. Click here to register.
