Ask any stylist, job coach or dating expert and they’ll tell you that red stands out. Eyes are immediately drawn to it. Some even say that the color red is a confidence booster and makes you feel powerful. Maybe that’s why we chose the color red to signify our fight against the No. 1 killer in women. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that it’s also the color of our hearts.

So join us this American Heart Month on Friday, February 3 for National Wear Red Day®!

National Wear Red Day® is an annual event lead by the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement. On the first Friday in February every year Americans join together and wear red to raise awareness about heart disease being the number 1 killer of women.

Why Go Red?

Cardiovascular diseases kill about one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. By wearing red on National Wear Red Day you’re supporting Go Red For Women, a movement that advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health.

Lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.”

Want to do more? Go Red For Women is a movement that starts with you! It’s knowledge that could save your life. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are:

  1. Total Cholesterol
  2. HDL (good) Cholesterol
  3. Blood Pressure
  4. Blood Sugar
  5. Body Mass Index (BMI)

Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. It’s time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life — their hearts depend on it.

Knowing your numbers is the first step. The second? Taking the sodium pledge to eat healthier and live better. When you Go Red, you are making a statement about yourself, your family and your community. When you take the sodium pledge, you make that same statement: eating healthfully is important to you.

So get out there this National Wear Red Day, share your pictures on social media with #GoRedWearRed and make a commitment to know your numbers!
