It's important to remember that walking is FUN! Find new and exciting ways to walk with friends and family. Consider joining a mallwalking group or indoor walking club when weather starts to make walking outdoors uncomfortable. Follow #FunWalks on social media to see stories and resources. Below is some information on some fun places to walk programs around the country!

  • Walk Across Texas! The eight-week program is open and free to the community. Pedometers were given to the first 25 individuals who attended the pre-screening event. Small groups of friends, neighbors, coworkers, or family members get together and start walking, jogging, biking, taking group exercise classes, and even gardening. Participants can walk together or individually, outside or at a mall or gym, any way that fits their schedule and lifestyle. Individuals keep track of their activity points, which convert to miles, with a goal of walking the 830 miles “across Texas” in eight weeks. That’s approximately the distance from west to east from El Paso to the Louisiana border http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu/
  • Walk Georgia: Walk Georgia is an online program where participants can log physical activity and invites you to spend eight weeks increasing your physical activity level in a fun, community-oriented way. The goal is to be active -- whether you're walking, biking or dancing. www.WalkGeorgia.org
  • Walking Wednesdays: In Tacoma, WA, this program promotes walking for transportation, health, and community well-being. Everyone can download and use the Walking Wednesday logo and connect via social media (#walkingwednesday). All events will be posted on the Transportation Choices Coalition Calendar http://www.downtownonthego.com/go/walking/walking-wednesdays
  • Explore and Adore Arcata: An activity booklet can be picked up at the Recreation Division office or downloaded online, with a series of questions and challenges that encourage residents to get out and visit various Arcata, CA, destinations. The program also provides feedback and ideas for promoting encouragement and safety for pedestrians. www.cityofarcata.org
  • Dog Walker Watch: Dog owners can get lots of benefits from regularly walking their furry friends, like exercise and socializing. Now there’s a way to use those daily walks to keep your neighborhood safe. Officers conduct hour-long training sessions, and they teach dog owners how to be more observant and how to report crime more effectively https://natw.org/dog
  • Cullman Walking Tours: Cullman is one of 26 Alabama cities to participate in the program this year. Walks take place on Saturdays in April. Community leaders in each of the participating towns will take guests through the historic districts or courthouse square areas of their hometowns. www.alabama.travel
