Job Listing: Advocacy Opening at Rudd Center

One of the childhood obesity movement’s leading nonprofit research and public policy groups is looking to hire someone to oversee its advocacy efforts on food marketing to young people.

The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity is seeking a director of advocacy resources, who will be charged with coordinating and leading the nonprofit’s food marketing efforts, including liaison work with community groups, child-related non-governmental organizations and others in the movement. The new director also would offer expert assistance to other advocates; produce fact sheets and reports highlighting food marketing news; and represent the Rudd Center at various events.

A master’s degree in a related field, a law degree and two years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination and education and experience is required. Applicants should also have significant advocacy experience, including working with low-income people and communities of color; familiarity with health care and nutrition issues; public speaking experience; ability to travel; and excellent writing skills.

In related news, the Rudd Center unveiled a new report this week finding that children are heavily targeted by food company websites using “advergames,” or branded computer games. The study, published in the Journal of Children and Media, also found that playing these games increases a child’s consumption of junk food.
