What inspired you to start working on childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions with far-reaching effects on the health of our next generation. Kids continue to eat unhealthy foods and exercise too little despite the billions of dollars that make up the U.S. weight loss and nutrition industry. Something needs to change and healthy habits needs to be instilled at an early age. In 2012, I co-founded Primitive Response Technology (PRT), with the mission of helping youth and adults improve lifestyle and well being, by informing and educating them about healthy eating and living choices. Using our blog and website, we promote our message that focuses on empowerment and mindfulness, encouraging kids and parents to learn how to manage junk food cravings, turn unhealthy habits into healthy ones, stay present in the moment, achieve a healthy weight and live a balanced life. We strive to inspire and motivate families by helping them understand their behaviors in the context of science and research so that they can make healthy choices on eating, exercise and overall wellness.

How are you helping to reverse childhood obesity?

Information is power and we are committed to communicating our message to help reverse childhood obesity and promote healthy weight. In our blog, we write about the automatic nature of unhealthy food cravings coming from the primitive, food-craving center of the brain and the impact of environment on poor food choices and eating habits. By instilling knowledge, kids can develop strategies to pre-empt junk food cravings and redirect their thinking to engage the rational brain and make healthy food choices. If kids and their parents become aware of the automatic nature of unhealthy eating, they can take the first step to gain control.

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far in helping reduce childhood obesity?

A highly respected mindful-eating organization reviewed our site and supported PRT’s efforts. They told us that the beauty of our anti-junk food and healthy living message is that “it lets people know they have choices.”

Who is your role model in your work?

I look up to Michelle Obama and applaud her efforts to combat childhood obesity.

What healthy snacks did you enjoy growing up?

I have always loved bananas. They are truly a “fast food,” just peel and eat. And they are delicious.
