IOM Webinar: Bringing Physical Activity Back to School

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is teaming up with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) for a webinar looking at how schools can implement IOM recommendations for increasing physical activity.

The Sept. 26 webinar is free and slated to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The IOM issued a report in May that urges schools to do more to bring physical activity and physical education opportunities to campus, including by taking a “whole-of-school approach,” designating P.E. as a core subject, considering physical activity in all school-related policy decisions, monitoring physical education and physical activity opportunities, providing training to teachers and ensuring equity in access to physical activity at school.

The webinar will look at how teachers, educators, parents, school administrators and school-based organizations can begin to implement some of those strategies on their campuses. It also will study the link between cognitive functioning and physical activity, highlight evidence-based physical activity programs that support the report’s findings and discuss ways to evaluate and develop such programs.

Scheduled speakers include Harold (Bill) Kohl, III, the IOM Committee chairman and professor at the University of Texas; Charles (Chuck) Hillman, an IOM Committee member and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Jayne Greenberg, an IOM Committee and PCFSN member and district director of physical education and health literacy at Miami-Dade County Public Schools; and Shannon Michael, a health scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Public Health.
