Gimme Five: Veronica Tomor


Veronica Tomor works as a community liaison for the National Institute of Health’s WeCan! program to build healthy environments and policies for kids in Florida. As a former track and field athlete, Veronica is bringing her expertise to help educate families and children about exercise and healthy eating.

What inspired you to start working on childhood obesity?

I have been working with WeCan! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activities and Nutrition) through the National Institute of Health. I am a community liaison for the past six years and also oversee the Women’s Foundation for Nutrition and Health, which is my own organization.

How are you helping to reverse childhood obesity?
I host multiple programs across the Florida area where I educate families and children about healthy eating and the importance of exercise through fun activities and visual tools.

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far in helping reduce childhood obesity?
Being part of a program through the National Institutes of Health and also having the opportunity to work with pediatric physician groups in changing curriculums that incorporate real world, practical information. This in turn is valuable information that can be used across the country and at a macro level to change behaviors in family and children.

Who is your role model in your work?

I don’t really have one. I think we all can learn from all the organizations that are coming together to do this right and they are growing in numbers. It is all about sharing best practices and getting the info out there in a way that is fun, adaptable and enthusiastic for people to make lifetime changes.

What healthy snacks did you enjoy growing up? What game or sport did you play growing up?

I was a track and field athlete, which got me addicted to running and training at an early age, 15. I have forever been conscious about the importance of exercise in my life and eating healthy and passing that on to others including my children. My favorite snacks growing up were yogurt, apples and bananas.
