Marketing Matters: Policy Approaches to Protect Children from Unhealthy Food Marketing at School
Speaker: Aaron Doeppers, Senior Manager, Field Technical Support at Voices for Healthy Kids

While school nutrition has continued to take large and critical steps forward, schools continue to be a vulnerable environment where children are subjected to marketing in a myriad of ways.  This session will look at public policy approaches as well as the latest research on how this marketing is understood by parents. Discussion will focus on: key aspects of policy approaches; policy lessons learned from specific state experiences under the first year of the Voices for Healthy Kids initiative; legal implications of policy approaches; and results of research on perceptions of marketing to children.

Implementing State and Local Procurement Standards to Improve Nutritional Environments in Public Places
Speaker: Ashley Bell, State Advocacy Consultant at the American Heart Association

This session will focus on the adoption of worksite wellness policies, including the federal government’s work to make healthy foods and beverages available to employees and visitors to federal facilities. This work is leading to a similar increase in policy change campaigns in states and local communities. The session will also highlight lessons learned from previous and current policy change campaigns, with an emphasis on the different types of policy change strategies available to state or local governments interested in providing healthier foods and beverages to their employees and visitors to their facilities.

Lessons Learned in Year One of the Childhood Obesity Advocacy Collaboration
Speaker: Jill Birnbaum, Executive Director of the Voices for Healthy Kids initiative

This session will give an overview of Voices for Healthy Kids’ progress in the first year of their initiative including success in helping advocates develop expertise in childhood obesity public policy, mobilizing networks for action and effective advocacy resources.
