Webinar to Look at History of Food Marketing to Kids

It’s not exactly a surprise to anyone working in the childhood obesity movement that the majority of food and drinks marketed to kids are unhealthy. But food marketing to kids has a long history — and some of that history might be surprising.

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Food Marketing Workgroup and NPLAN are teaming up for a Nov. 19 webinar studying the history of food marketing and past efforts to address it. Speakers will discuss an array of topics, from the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Kid Vid rulemaking in the 1970s to responses from the food and entertainment industries to current policy efforts at the state and local levels.

Scheduled speakers include William Dietz, former director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity; Albert Kramer, former director of the FTC’s Consumer Protection Bureau; and Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Berkeley Media Studies Group Director Lori Dorfman will moderate.

The webinar is slated to run from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern. Click here to register.
