Last week, community organizers working to improve access to healthy food & physical activity came together for the Voices for Healthy Kids Policy Summits in Minneapolis.  Attendees had the opportunity to hop on board the Twin Cities Mobile Market to learn about the innovative way its bringing affordable, healthy food directly into under-resourced neighborhoods.

The mobile market operates year round, partnering with food suppliers to offer everything families need to create healthy meals for a variety of cultural diets, including as much local, in-season produce as possible. Examples of what you’ll find on the bus:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables at grocery story quality
  • Lean meats: chicken, fish, beef and pork
  • A full dairy section: milk, cheese and eggs
  • Staples like rice, dried beans, canned goods, flour, sugar and healthy cereal

The market maintains a routine schedule, so families in the Saint Paul neighborhoods it visits can depend on it for their weekly shopping.  Additionally, the mobile market has partnered with other community groups to provide nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and recipes to its customers.
