Pack Your Bags! More Conferences on the Agenda


Winter is here, but spring is coming… and that means it’s almost time for conference season.

The Green Schools National Conference is slated to kick-off March 27 in Sacramento, centered on sustainability and green school strategies for K-12 schools. Healthy school food is expected to be a hot topic in conference programming, which will focus on an array of environmental issues in schools.

Keynote speakers include Stephen Ritz, the founder of the nonprofit Green Bronx Machine. More than 1,200 participants attended last year’s conference and organizers expect similar numbers this year. The big event will include a student summit, allowing young people to share their ideas for creating healthier, greener schools.

Registration is priced at $400 for individuals, $325 for groups of four to 19 people and promotional partners through March 20.

Next on the conference agenda is the 7th Annual Farm to Cafeteria Conference, which will kick off in Austin, Texas on April 15. More than 1,000 food service professionals, farmers, educators, youth leaders, policymakers, advocates, government officials and others are expected to attend, working together to discuss ways to bring local food to institutional cafeterias nationwide.

Restaurateur Alice Waters, creator of The Edible Schoolyard model public education program, is among the scheduled keynote speakers, alongside Real Food Generation founder Anim Steel, national radio commenter Jim Hightower, food and nutrition advocate and journalist Toni Tipton-Martin and Texas State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez.

Early bird registration is priced at $350 and runs through March 4. The regular rate is priced at $400.

Finally, the National Food Policy Conference is scheduled to take place April 22 and 23 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington. Organized by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA), the annual event brings together consumer and health advocates, the food industry and government officials.

The conference is expected to focus on food policy topics impacting consumers and the food industry, including consumer trends, meat and poultry safety, the local food movement, childhood obesity and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Registration rates vary; admission for representatives of CFA groups is $90, while registration for government, academic and non-CFA public interest groups and independent nutritionists and dietitians is set at $125. Industry, trade and professional association representatives will be charged $325.
