Southern Obesity Summit Announces Conference Details

The Southern Obesity Summit is heading to the Bluegrass State!

For the first time, the annual event will take place in Kentucky, bringing together hundreds of people from 16 Southern states to discuss obesity prevention. Summit organizers at the Texas Health Institute are partnering with Shaping Kentucky’s Future Collaborative to put on the eighth annual event, which is slated to take place Oct. 5 to 7 in Louisville.

While all states have seen a rise in obesity rates over the past three decades, the epidemic is most prominent in the South. According to the 2013 F as in Fat report, Louisiana has the highest obesity rate in the nation at 34.7 percent, followed by Mississippi with a rate of 34.6 percent and Arkansas with a rate of 34.5 percent.

The goal of the summit is to bring stakeholders together from across the 16 Southern states to collaborate to identify and implement potential solutions. Policymakers, leaders from community-based organizations, nonprofit organizations, associations, health care providers, and youth representatives all are expected to attend the summit, taking part in workgroups and breakout sessions to discuss ways to reduce obesity across the region.
