Heading Back to School, Virtually

While many Leaders in the childhood obesity movement are well-versed in the nutritional improvements that are being made across the country to school meals this year, many parents, students and others have questions about the changes.

That’s one of the reasons why our friends at the Kids’ Safe & Healthful Foods Project are teaming up with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National PTA to host an online event Thursday night promoting the new school meal guidelines.

Titled “Virtual Back to School Night: The School Day Just Got Healthier!” the big event is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will include a live webcast of a panel discussion on the updated standards. The talk is expected to showcase what sort of food parents and students can expect to find in school meals. Panelists also will discuss how parents can navigate the changes and help their children make healthy choices.

Participants scheduled to take part include National PTA President Betsy Landers, USDA administrator Audrey Rowe and Sam Kass, the White House chef and senior policy adviser for Healthy Food Initiatives. PreventObesity.net Leader Jessica Donze Black, the project director for the Kids’ Safe & Healthful Foods Project, is scheduled to moderate the panel.

You can submit questions for the panel ahead of the event via the National PTA website or by posting a tweet using the hashtag #SchoolFoodsRule. PreventObesity.net is scheduled to attend the panel discussion and will be live tweeting as well — follow along via @Prevent_Obesity.
