Grant Helps Schools Expand Breakfast Programs

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) is offering grants to help urban school districts expand their breakfast programs.

AASA and the Walmart Foundation are partnering up on the grant effort, which seeks to support school districts located in a metropolitan area with 50,000 or more residents, AASA project director Kelly Beckwith tells the Inside Track. Schools must have no more than 40 percent breakfast participation and 50 percent or more of students must be eligible for free or reduced priced meals to qualify for the grant program, according to Beckwith, a PreventObesity.net Leader.

The school district superintendent must also be a member of AASA and the district must have written support from the superintendent, district food service director and principals of participating schools to be eligible for the grant program. Click here for more information and to apply.

According to research compiled by AASA, school breakfast can play an important role in the effort to reduce childhood obesity and hunger, especially for low-income families. It’s also been shown to improve test scores, student attendance, and a child’s overall health.
