Frequently Asked Questions

What is Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter?

At Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter, we’re building an online network of people who are dedicated to ensuring kids grow up at a healthy weight. We provide free communications, tools and resources to registered Leaders who are building healthy communities and policies for kids. We also engage Supporters in campaigns to help create healthy environments for children and their families.

What sort of campaigns does Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter work on?
We assist our friends in the movement with campaigns that will create environmental changes needed to reverse obesity. Our past campaigns include a push to support proposed nutritional principles for food and beverage companies to follow when advertising to children; an effort to support funding for bicycle and pedestrian routes, which provide an active way for children to get to school; and a campaign to back improved nutritional standards for public school meals.

I’m looking to shed a few pounds, or have a child who needs to get fit. What can Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter do for me?

While we do not have any one-on-one tools for people looking to take charge of their own or their family’s health, we welcome anyone who is interested in working to ensure kids in our society grow up at a healthy weight. We encourage you to join the movement as a Supporter to learn about the societal factors that are driving obesity and get engaged on the things being done to reverse it.

Are you Let’s Move?

We aren't a part of Let's Move!, First Lady Michelle Obama’s childhood obesity initiative, although we do on occasion work together to support each other’s efforts. Let’s Move! also links to our website, but otherwise we aren't associated with each other.

How else can I connect with Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter?

You can connect with us on social media, send us an email at info@Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter or can call us at 202-695-3415. Want to learn more about our staff? Check out our Meet the Staff page.

Do I qualify as a Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter Leader?

The main criteria to apply as a Leader is that you are working  — either professionally or as a volunteer — to change policies and environments affecting childhood obesity. Some of our Leaders are working to get healthier food in schools. Other Leaders are working on building more walkable communities. No matter if you are working by yourself locally or work with a national group with a larger staff, you can qualify as a Leader. People focused on individual behavior change do not qualify as Leaders.

I do not meet the requirements to be a Leader. Should I still join Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter?

YES! At Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter, we are looking to engage anyone interested in joining the movement to ensure children grow up at a healthy weight. Sign up to be a Supporter, and you’ll be kept in the loop on what’s happening in the movement, including on how to get involved and help create healthy communities and environments.

What resources does a Leader receive?

Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter exists to help qualified Leaders connect with each other to lead the charge and create change more effectively. We provide free communications, promotion and assistance to help folks working to create healthy environments for kids do their job easier. Our services can help you make connections with other Leaders and promote your own campaigns. For example, Leaders receive a copy of our weekly e-newsletter, the Inside Track, which features exclusive news on the childhood obesity movement and profiles of other Leaders. Leaders also can customize our widgets for their own websites, including our popular Map of the Movement, which displays where advocacy work in the field is actually taking place. We also provide contact information for other Leaders and Supporters interested in a particular issue area or focus. Click here to learn more about our Leader benefits.

I work with a network of people on issues related to healthy weights for children, can you help me get them all signed up?

Qualified Leaders can sign up for our free tools and services here. If you want to set up a customized registration form for your colleagues, you can contact Campaign Research and Development Manager, Allyson Frazier, at info@Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter and she will help you.

How do I find a Leader working in my area?

The Map of the Movement is a visual representation of the Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter Leader network. The map can filter the Leaders displayed by geographic and issue area. If filtered by geographic location, Leaders will show up in the states where they are active, so sometimes Leaders will actually be located in a different state than where their program focuses. Once you find a Leader with whom you’d like to connect, you can click their name to view their full Voices for Healthy Kids ActionCenter profile. You can also use our list of Leaders to find Leaders in your area.
