Decision on Nutrition Facts Panel Delayed by FDA

A revamped nutrition facts panel designed to make it easier for Americans to see how many calories and added sugars are in packaged foods and drinks is being delayed.

NutritionLabels.jpgThe Food and Drug Administration recently stated that it plans to push back the deadline for a rule requiring food companies to use the new label. The revised nutrition facts would make calorie counts on drinks and packaged food more prominent. Current labels list how many sugars are in a packaged food or drinks, including milk fruit which are naturally occurring.

The FDA had originally given companies until July of 2018 to comply, with smaller makers getting an extra year. However, the FDA now intends to give companies extra time to be compliant. A specific deadline was not released. Organizations including the American Heart Association, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and others reacted to the delay.
