Last week, the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services—joined by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Councilmember Dannielle Glaros, and others—announced the expansion of the Maryland Market Money Program in Prince George’s County.

Maryland Market Money is a statewide program that incentivizes those receiving federal nutrition benefits to shop at local farmers markets by matching the dollars they receive in benefits, in most cases up to $5 per person per market day. On Wednesday, the Department of Social Services, responsible for the oversight of Maryland Market Money dollars, received more than $100,000 in the county’s 2020 budget to expand the program.

Benefits that qualify for this program include SNAP, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).

Congratulations to the Prince George’s Food Equity Council, Greater Washington American Heart Association, Maryland Hunger Solutions, and the Maryland Farmers Market Association, and thank you to the advocates and volunteers who are working to make healthy, affordable food more accessible in the county!
