Exciting news from Hawaii! Gov. David Ige signed Senate Bill 549, a bill that promotes healthy beverage options for children! The bill supports parents’ efforts to feed their children well by ensuring that healthy beverages are the default option in restaurant kids’ meals purchased in the state.

The default options in kids’ meals will include:

  • water, sparkling water, or flavored water, with no added sugars, corn syrup, or other natural or artificial sweeteners
  • unflavored nonfat or low-fat (1%) dairy milk
  • 100% fruit juice or vegetable juice, or fruit juice or vegetable juice combined with water or carbonated water, with no added natural or artificial sweeteners

Kids’ meals in the state will have healthy beverages as the default option starting January 1, 2020.

Congratulations to the American Heart Association - Hawaii and to all advocates and volunteers who are working to make each day healthier for all children!
