Exciting progress from Delaware! It has become the third state to require that restaurant kids’ meals offer healthier drinks as the first option for customers!

The kids’ meal legislation, approved by a 16-5 vote, will make healthier drinks like water, milk, or 100% juice default drinks with restaurant children’s meals, instead of sugary drinks like soda.

Momentum from the Wilmington ordinance that passed in the fall helped build momentum around this campaign.

It quickly came together with a freshman bill sponsor and a core group of organizational supporters, including: the American Heart Association, AAP of Delaware, YMCA of Delaware, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, CSPI, League of Women Voters, Medical Society of Delaware, Delaware Public Health Association/Delaware Academy of Medicine, Delaware Dental Society, Delaware Association of Physicians’ Assistants, Delaware Chiropractic Society, Delaware Dental Hygienists’ Association, A.I. Dupont Nemours, Christiana Care, and Saint Francis Healthcare.

The bill completed the legislative process on Thursday, June 27th and is now awaiting the signature of the governor.
