Kid Chefs Headed to Kids State Dinner

Let’s Move! and Epicurious.com announced the winners of Healthy Lunchtime Challenge this week – and the recipients will be feted with a trip to the White House in August.

The 54 children (and their parents) crafted healthy lunch recipes based on the MyPlate icon. The winning entries were picked by a panel of celebrity judges that included White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass, Chef Jose Andres, Portion Size Me authors Max and Alex Reid and officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Education.

The winners will be welcomed to the White House on Aug. 20 by First Lady Michelle Obama, who will show them around the executive mansion, give them a tour of the vegetable garden and even attend a special kids’ state dinner, where some of the winning dishes will be served.

The names of the winners and their dishes have been published online, and a special cookbook containing all the recipes is expected to be available sometime in August. The dishes range from “Kickin’ Chicken Salad” to “Triple F: Fake Fast Food” and “Miss Kitty’s Egg Salad Sensation.”

More than 1,200 entries were received.
