What inspired you to start working on childhood obesity?

When I was a child, some of my friends would get teased for not being able to keep up with other children while playing. I see much of that today, so I decided to take action in an effort to help obese children lose weight.

How are you helping to reverse childhood obesity?

I am providing children with a fun, interactive cooking demonstration called “The Patch Organics.” The program also provides children and adults with low, medium, and high-impact exercises, a sing along chant, yoga demonstrations and healthy eating tips and recipes. My signature dish, which I present at every performance, is called “fruit hash.”

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far in helping reduce childhood obesity?

My biggest accomplishment so far is spreading the importance of healthy eating, exercise and living more wisely through each episode of my comic strip, which is also called The Patch Organics. The comic strip is regularly posted on school websites and in newsletters, so children can read about the importance of building healthy habits first-hand. This is a global effort that will go on for some time until I have reached every country on the map!

Who is your role model in your work?

My role model is the late, great Dr. Seuss. He provided laughter and life lessons through his materials.

What healthy snacks did you enjoy growing up?

I grew up very poor, one of four children to a single mother. I enjoyed apples when I was growing up. They were cheap and easy to come by.
