Alliance for a Healthier Generation Unveils Smart Snacks Calculator

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is scheduled to officially implement improved nutritional standards for school snacks and drinks in July (thanks in part to the work of more than 180,000 PreventObesity.net Leaders and Supporters like you).

But adjusting to the new rules can be a bit tricky. Our friends at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation have created the Smart Snacks Calculator to make it easier for schools, parents and others to determine which snacks and drinks meet the guidelines.

The interactive online tool asks users to enter information about the snack (whether it’s a snack, side or entrée) and answer a few additional questions, including what the first ingredient of the product is. The calculator then determines whether that product is compliant.

The Smart Snacks Calculator is available for free on the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program website and can be embedded onto any website.

In other Alliance news, the organization is currently accepting applications for its Healthy Schools Program ambassador program. Ambassadors serve as champions for the program in schools and communities, using their own personal successes to help others implement best practices in school wellness.

Applications are open through March 14. Click here for eligibility requirements and to apply.
