Breaking news out of Tucson, Ariz.!  Last week, after two years of advocacy, community outreach, and a collaborative policy development process with Tucson Department of Transportation and the Complete Streets Task Force, the City Council voted 7-0 to make streets safer by passing a Complete Streets policy!

Close to 4,000 Tucsonans are injured – and more than 50 people lose their lives – every year while traveling on Tucson streets. This policy ensures that the city of Tucson will become more walkable, bike-able, safer, and will foster social engagement. This includes integrating and prioritizing multimodal street improvements such as bicycle boulevards, protected bicycle lanes, connected and accessible networks of sidewalks/walking paths, safe and convenient street crossings, and comfortable and inviting streetscapes.

Additionally, this policy focuses on communities that have traditionally been underrepresented in city planning and decision-making processes. These populations include individuals of low-income, people of color, older adults, children, youth, people with disabilities, and people living in households without access to a private automobile.

Congratulations to the Living Streets Alliance, the National Complete Streets Coalition, and the American Heart Association Southern Arizona. Many thanks to the community and coalition, as well as City Health, an initiative of the de Beaumont Foundation and Kaiser Permanente, for placing an emphasis on streets that are built for all modes of transportation and all people in mind. The implementation of this policy serves to improve the streets of Tucson for decades to come!
